Bipolar Disorders

We all have ups and downs, but if your highs and lows seem more extreme than most people, you may want to explore if there’s something underlying going on, especially if your sleep and appetite are affected. Many people don't realize there are several types of bipolar disorders, some less severe than others.

All of the disorders are characterized periods of depressive symptoms alternating with periods of manic or hypomanic symptoms. Cyclothymia is similar to bipolar disorder, but the symptoms are less severe. Manic-depression is an another term for bipolar disorder. Please see the
Depression page for more information on symptoms of depression.

Bipolar Disorder Symptoms

Symptoms of a manic or hypomanic episode are as follows:

  • inflated self-esteem or grandiosity
  • more talkative than usual
  • racing thoughts
  • distractibility
  • decreased need for sleep (feeling rested after only a few hours of sleep)
  • increase in goal-directed activity (socially, at work or school, or sexually)
  • excessive involvement in pleasurable activities that have a high potential for painful consequences (e.g. unrestrained buying sprees or sexual indiscretions)
Please keep in mind that only a trained therapist is qualified to diagnose these disorders, but if you are experiencing symptoms you should contact a therapist as soon as possible.
